Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about IP addresses and our tools
What is an IP address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numeric identifier assigned to every device connected to the Internet. It allows devices to communicate with each other on the network. There are two versions: IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1) and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:db8::1).
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (about 4.3 billion possible addresses), while IPv6 uses 128 bits (virtually unlimited). IPv6 was created to address IPv4 exhaustion and offers better native security.
Can my IP address reveal my exact location?
No. IP geolocation provides an approximate location, usually at the city or region level. It cannot reveal your exact address. Accuracy depends on the ISP and can range from a few kilometers to tens of kilometers.
What is reverse DNS?
Reverse DNS (rDNS) is the opposite of standard DNS resolution: it finds the domain name associated with an IP address. It's often used to identify IP owners or verify the legitimacy of mail servers.
Does MonIP.ch store my IP address?
No. MonIP.ch does not log or store visitors' IP addresses. We don't use tracking cookies and don't collect any personal data. Your IP is displayed client-side only.
Can I change my IP address?
Your public IP is assigned by your Internet Service Provider. It can be dynamic (changes periodically) or static (fixed). To hide it, you can use a VPN which will assign you a different IP address.
Why is my IP different on IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 and IPv6 are two separate protocols with distinct address pools. If your connection supports both, you'll have a different address for each protocol. MonIP.ch displays the address corresponding to the protocol used to access the site.
Are MonIP.ch tools free?
Yes, all MonIP.ch tools are completely free and ad-free. The service is hosted in Switzerland by Progest SA and funded as part of our commitment to accessible web tools for everyone.
